Club News - 18th October

Box League

A quick reminder that Round 2 of the “new improved Box League” will be open on 21st October to all members, catering for all standards. If you are yet to join, you still can if you get in touch by tomorrow!

Following inadequate publicity for our men players (mea culpa), several new entries have been received and will be integrated into the present league structure according to the organisers’ perception of their respective abilities. From Round 3 onwards, new recruits may be asked to join the lowest division.

If you wish to join and have not yet notified Jan or Gray please do so by 19th October if possible!

Jan 07817807634 or 01530 262089. Gray: 07952328387 or 01530 412374.

Resurfacing Courts 3 and 4

We are please to announce that courts 3 and 4 are to be resurfaced, to further improve the facilities at the club.

Please note the work will be carried out between the 28th October and the 8th November. While the work takes place Court 2 will also be unavailable in order for the contractor to get equipment, and the new carpet, to courts 3 and 4. While this is inconvenient it is quietest time of the year to carry the work out as the contractor cannot lay new carpet between the end of November and the end of March. There is also likely to be some interference with court availability before 28th October due to preparation work.

Coaching Update

As many of you will know, Matt Davies has left the club to take up a role with the LTA, we'd like to thank Matt for his work at the club over the past few years and wish him luck in his new role. Tom Redfern has begun his PGCE training at Loughborough university and although he will still be delivering some sessions, will not be doing as many hours on the programme as he was last term.

Charlotte Machin will be joining the club as a coach. Charlotte has been delivering Leicestershire county training for the last year as well as captaining county teams at county cups. She played on the ITF circuit as a junior and had a senior world ranking at the age of 16. She has represented the county at both junior and senior events and is looking forward to getting started at the club.

Any questions on anything coaching related, please contact Alex on 07931412238 or alexguzder@hotmail.co.uk

Annual General Meeting – advance notice

Our AGM is to be held on Wednesday, 27th November 2019. Therefore any resolutions should be sent to claire.bridges@btinternet.com or received in writing to the Club Address by this date.

Revision of the Club’s Constitution

A small sub-committee has been revising the Constitution in order to:

- bring it into line with current practice

- clarify the wording

- take into account earlier amendments

The Committee will table a Resolution at the AGM to adopt the new version in place of the existing version which was last revised in 2014. A draft of the proposed new version will be issued to members with the formal Notice of the 2019 AGM.

Car Park update…

Following the “seamless introduction of the new arrangements” for parking at the Castle (hopefully you have spotted the new signage!) please consider the following minor points when using the car park:

  • The closer together we park, the more cars which can be fitted in.
  • If we park alternately “nose to tail”, adjacent drivers can use to the same space when opening doors and less room is needed between one “pair” and the next.
  • It is suggested that each driver self-identifies by leaving a written note (with contact details) visible from outside, especially in cars parked behind the front row so that they can be moved if necessary.
  • Please do not use the car park on Saturdays – Castle visitors have sole use.

Thank you all for your co-operation.

Men’s Team Tennis

As our season draws to a close I would like to thank everyone who has played for any of our teams

throughout the summer. It is always a pleasure to see new players join the teams and to drive new friendships and partnerships across the club. Also a huge debt of gratitude to all the Captains and the efforts they make in welcoming teams to our club and ensuring good conduct on court and sufficient players to make a great evening for everyone.

We do have a small fixture list for the Winter league and Ian Randon would welcome anyone willing to play over various weekends leading up to Christmas.

If you would like more details on this or to be considered for team tennis next season keep an eye on the notice boards and we will be arranging coaching sessions in the Spring as well as some team events “off court”.

Food and Drink at the club

The Club has been advised by the North West Leicestershire District Council that whenever food and/or drink is “made available” at the Club, whether charged for or not:

  • all ingredients most be disclosed to those who receive it
  • if prepared other than by a commercial manufacturer, the preparation must be by or supervised by a person holding a recognised qualification in food handling.

The Committee is considering the implications of the Food Safety Act 1990, the Food Safety and Hygiene (England) Regulations 2013 and the Food Information Regulations 2014 so far as they relate to food provided at the Club, including that made available for Team Teas, Open Days, Tournaments, etc. If any Member has practical experience of these provisions, Gray (01530 412374 or 07952328387) will be pleased to hear from you.

An Apple a Day...

Gray's Egremont Russet apple tree has been more than usually prolific this season and threatens to outstrip even the needs of the local apple wine industry, so...
